Fraser Island
Queensland, Australia

On the 120 kilometer-long sandbar that is Fraser Island, the beach at low tide is your highway. Braving the freshwater creeks and soft sand traps that often crossed our path, we sped along the damp, packed sand in our rented 4WD, gaping at the views out our windows when we weren’t pretending to be in an SUV commercial. The weather was stormy and the ocean wild during our visit, making for a less crowded island and more striking photographs.

The sky was gloomy, casting dark shadows on the pristine Fraser beach. Perfect waves crawled up towards our 4-wheel drive, parked hastily on the sand highway. We were feeling social and approached some other visitors, two pelicans contemplating their next move with patience and grace. They let us join them for a bit, before flying off to fill their oversized mouths with fresh fish.
