Vang Vieng area, Laos
En route to explore the area's caves on a guided
hike, we passed through a small village boasting acres of beautiful
farmland, picturesquely set off by bamboo-thatched fences. The striking
karst formations so prevalent in this part of the country peek out from
beneath fluffy clouds, but the rich colors of the land behind the rough-hewn
pattern of the fence steal the show.

Though the area is known for
its spiritual caves, the lush fields were what captured my attention
that smolderingly humid day. As we hiked from village to village, we
became intimate with the land and tread only on the paths that adjoined
the neighboring farms. Little straw huts perch proudly above the land,
providing their dwellers with necessary shelter from the blazing sun
and the ability to keep watch below. Bamboo-like fences protect the
crops from visitors and secure harvests to feed the kids, who play contentedly
in the nearby streams..
