Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia

These classic Apsara carvings have been dancing for over a thousand years on this pillar at the massive, crumbling Bayon, the first ruins we explored at the magnificent temple complex known as Angkor Wat. Built between the 9th and 13th centuries of Cambodia’s golden Angkor period, the temples convey much more than an incomprehensible passing of time. The astonishing effort, skill and vision behind their creation are a testament to the rich history of the land and the brilliant strength of its people. I was particularly impressed by the many intricately carved details we found on everything from thick pillars and bas-reliefs to the narrow insides of doorways.

Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Two monks in brilliant orange sit and relax high above the landscape, perhaps reflecting on the national treasure they call home. The ancient temples of Angkor Wat stand with majesty, grace and power, a striking contrast to the internal devastations that have plagued Cambodia’s recent history. Steps are finally being taken to protect this wonder, and a more stable government should make the area safe for centuries to come. I was thrilled to be there before further development occurs, as I fear corporations will soon take hold and create an inevitable tourist trap that will surely overshadow the area’s cultural and historical importance.
