Opononi, North Island, New Zealand

Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a family playing on a dock overlooking the blue water and lush sand dunes of the tiny village of Opononi. Within minutes, I was shooting the children as they eagerly and fearlessly jumped off wooden pillars into the cool bay, one by one, two by two, or six at a time. The raining splashes of bodies hitting water didn’t distract me from the two adorable twins who were reluctant to jump. One was even less interested in getting his picture taken.

Our visit to sleepy Opononi afforded us stunning views of the massive sand dunes across Hokianga Harbor and our first encounter with the local Maori people. The two baby-bouncing mothers we met on the dock giggled at our attempts to photograph their rambunctious children as they savored the last few minutes of playtime before the sun disappeared. When something finally held the attention of these twins for longer than two seconds, I caught ‘em when they weren’t looking.
